My Digital Nomad Adventure Had Humble Beginnings

My Digital Nomad Adventure Begins

Just about to jump 6000 miles out of my comfort zone.

Sold everything I own. Quit a job I loved. Left the best home I’ve ever lived in. That’s right i’m officially homeless. Leaving everything I have ever known to move halfway across the world to become a digital nomad living in Asia.

I had to overcome a lot of fear to live my dream. I had to leave those that I loved behind. There was a lot running through my head. What if something bad happens? What if I lose everything? What if I run out of money? What if I get really sick?

But life is short and if I didn’t do this now I knew it would never happen. You have to make sacrifices to live your dream or your dreams become the sacrifice.

So I bought a one way ticket to Asia and I’m hoping for the best. Chiang Mai Thailand, Osaka Japan, Bali Indonesia here I come. The whole world is now my home.

Humble Beginnings – I Arrived in Chiang Mai Thailand

I was super tired so I just crashed as soon as I got here. My entire travel time was about 24 hours. Woke up at 3am today to share a valuable lesson I relearned last night.

TRAVEL TIP #1: Photos Can Be Deceiving. Airbnb Expectations Don’t Always Meet Reality

Make sure to book a short term rental and look for long term stays in person. Pictures and online ads can be deceiving. I have to wait till next month to book my next place. Going for something a bit more luxurious next time lol.

One of their bathrooms is for midgets. Door is too small for me, I have to duck to get in. But at least there is air conditioning. The place doesn’t exactly smell the best.

The bed was so hard it was like sleeping on the floor. I ended up spending $60 on a bean bag bed so I can finally sleep in comfort.

Apartment Upgrade In Nimman

All moved into my new appartment. Time for a lifestyle upgrade. For 12,000 thai bhat or $504/mo this is what you can get in the Nimman district in Chiang Mai Thailand. Right by Maya Mall. Looking forward fo finally getting a good night sleep in a comfy bed.

In Maya mall the is a Whole Foods equivalent grocery store. This is what you can get for $104 CND or 2480 Thai baht. The prices for the most part were pretty cheap, like the chicken breast was $1, but jam & wine was expensive. Double the price of Canada. Probably because they’re imported. They have a lot of interesting fruits I have never seen before. This week i’m going to try a Pomelo.

Scary God Of Destruction Shrine Next to my House

This has to be one of the scariest gods I have ever seen. Her name is Kali the Hindu goddess of time, change, power and destruction. She is dark, violent and is often standing on top of husband crushing him to death. I wonder what he did to piss her off so badly.

She carries a severed head and wears a necklace made of even more severed heads. Oh and apparently she likes red fanta pop! This is located at a shrine close to my house. No idea why, as most Thai people have no idea what this is. Took some asking around and some research to find out what this even was.

Getting around in Chiang Mai

This is a bus In Thailand. Also known as Red Truck or Songthaew. They charge 20 – 200 Thai baht (0.84 – $8.42 cnd) depending how stupid the driver thinks you are as a foreigner. They will take you where you need to go on the cheap if you know how to negotiate.

TRAVEL TIP #2: How to ride a Songthaew in Chiang Mai

Learn what the prices are supposed to be. Instead of asking what the price is, having them thinking you don’t know, and then getting a highly inflated price. Tell them where you want to go and the price your willing to pay and get them to verify.

Example: Tha Pae Gate 20 Bhat? Yes or no. If you ask for the price they’ll charge you a lot more.

My New Favorite Way To Get Around Town Chiang Mai

Just found my new favorite way to get around in Chiang Mai. The electric scooter. So much fun, feel like a kid again but these are for adults only. You need a credit card to use one. Only costs $2 a day to rent for unlimited 30 min rides with Neuron app. Great way to blow off some steam on a break ?
